IBR System Training

A Center for Technology & Training event.

The Inventory-based Rating (IBR) System is a condition assessment system for collecting condition data on unpaved road. Collecting this information on federal-aid eligible unpaved roads not only ensures compliance with Public Act 499 but also provides road-owning with valuable information for managing and maintaining their road network. This training introduces local road-owning agencies to the IBR System and explains how to conduct effective assessments of unpaved road conditions and how to store condition data. Multiple single-session webinars offered in the spring

Thawcaster Webinar

A Center for Technology & Training event.

Keeping roadways open during the spring thaw can be quite a challenge when trying balance keeping roads at a desired level of service and using roads to transport heavy loads common to agricultural and logging operations. Closing the roads can protect them since a thaw-weakened base is unable to support heavy loads, which can result in the destruction of the road. Thawcaster helps local road-owning agencies balance the need to protect roadways with the need for industries to transport goods and equipment. Thawcaster is a web-based application, free to Michigan road-owning agencies, that allows agencies to assess the integrity of roads during thaw-weakening periods and institute the minimum necessary seasonal weight restrictions. One single-session webinar offered in the spring

MDOT LAP Webinars

A Michigan Department of Transportation Local Agency Programs event hosted by the CTT.

Road and bridge construction projects have materials, design, environmental, documentation, and legal considerations beyond the pavement itself. The Michigan Department of Transportation Local Agency Program webinar delve into these critical considerations for local road-owning agencies. During these webinars, experts provide participants with a strong understanding of what is needed to ensure projects meet federal and state aid requirements. The MDOT LAP webinars include Federal Aid 101 for Local Agency Construction InspectorsFederal Aid 101 for Office TechniciansFabrication Inspection for the Local Agency Program ProjectsWhat to do When Your Project Needs Right-of-Way Parcels, and Threatened & Endangered Species. One single-session webinar on each topic offered in the spring.

Constructing Pedestrian Facilities for Accessibility Workshop

A Michigan Concrete Association event sponored by the US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, the Michigan Department of Transportation, amd the Michigan Chapter of the American Public Works Association; hosted by the CTT.

Contractors and inspectors need to know the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the standards set by the Access Board to keep municipal infrastructure projects compliant. Experts from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Michigan Concrete Association (MCA), and the county road agencies will teach proper design, planning, and construction procedures for complying with ADA requirements. Multiple single-session workshops offered in the spring

Writing & Presentation Skills Workshop

A Michigan LTAP (Center for Technology & Training) event.

Good writing and good presenting can be likened to a good set of plans in road and bridge construction. Good writing and presenting are essential for communicating your intentions and ideas effectively just like good plans are essential for the successful construction of roads and bridges. Being successful in writing and presenting depends upon knowing, applying, and modulating underlying communication principles. Sharpen your pencils! This workshop will help you identify the keys for clear and concise writing and for effective presenting. And, you will get a chance to put these principles into practice. Workshop topics vary by session. One single-session workshop offered in the spring

TAMC Asset Management Training

A Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council & Center for Technology & Training event.

According to Public Act (PA) 325 of 2018, asset management is "an ongoing process of maintaining, preserving, upgrading, and operating physical assets cost effectively, based on a continuous physical inventory and condition assessment and investment to achieve established performance goals". To care for Michigan's road, bridge, culvert, and traffic signal assets in the most effective and efficient manner, PA 325 requires local agencies with 100 or more certified lane miles to develop an asset management plan that summarizes aset inventory and conditions, performance goals, revenues and expenses, risk of failure, and coordination of efforts with other entities or asset owners. This core "compliance plan" should include supporting data, which may consist of asset-specific asset management plans. Local agency staff and their consultants can take advantage of trainings offered through the Michigan LTAP.

Compliance Plan Training Webinar: This webinar will help local agency personnel and/or their consultants produce a "compliance plan"—a transportation asset management plan that contains information required to comply with PA325. Participants will learn how to use a Word document template of the compliance plan and the tools to merge their data into the template. Appendixes containing supporting detail about the compliance plan information will be covered in the bridge and pavement trainings. Multiple single-session webinars offered in spring and early summer

Bridge Asset Management Training: This series consists of a two-part webinar that overviews basic and advanced principles of bridge asset management. A hands-on workshop guides agency staff and/or their consultants who manage local agency bridges in turning their inventory and condition data (i.e., data stored in MiBridge and inspection recommendations) and cost estimates into a bridge asset management plan. Participants will learn how a bridge-specific transportation asset management plan can benefit their agency and can serve as an appendix in the compliance plan. Two multiple-session webinar-and-workshop series offered in spring and summer

Pavement Asset Management Plan Training: This hands-on workshop guides local agency staff and/or consultants who manage local agency pavement assets in turning their inventory and condition data (i.e., data stored in Roadsoft) and cost estimates into a pavement asset management plan. Participants will learn how a pavement-specific transportation asset management plan can benefit their agency and can serve as an appendix in the compliance plan. Multiple single-session workshops offered in spring and summer.
